In Loving Memory
Blissfully Me Von Sasaunna DD “Bliss”
May 25, 2017 to April 27, 2024
Bliss was our special girl. Most of our friends never really got to know her as she wasn’t the most social Berner. She wasn’t aggressive or even shy she just wasn’t interested in socializing beyond her own circle, but she was an incredible worker and loved to learn new things. She would generally breeze by visitors with a stuffy in her mouth and she may or may not eventually come out to further investigate the invaders. Some people she took to right away whereas others she did a fly by and returned to her area to nap.
We did the conformation thing a couple of times, and she had 2 points towards her Canadian CH but the whole show scene had no appeal to her, so we decided to try other things. We had 2 legs towards our Rally Novice title when Covid hit, and we never got back into the ring. We were in the middle of training for an upcoming Draft test with DDX in our sites when we got the diagnosis no one wants to hear, and gears were switched.
Bliss really enjoyed motherhood and didn’t hesitate to pinch hit when she was needed. With her first litter (our C litter) she had two lovely little girls and then we added 3 little boys from a friend’s litter. We nicknamed them Laverne, Shirley, Lenny, Squiggy and Carmine. Laverne and Shirley went on to become Carmen and Bryn. The boys went on to become Gus, Bruce and Nash. Then with her second litter (our E litter), again two little girls, she had to help nurse Blue’s litter of seven little girls when mastitis forced us to treat Blue with non puppy friendly medications. Elsie and Emma stayed here. Bliss never batted an eye and loved to look after puppies.
Bliss loved her stuffies. She didn’t really have favourites except in the barn where she had Penny Pineapple that she loved to fetch. You always had to remove a stuffy from her mouth before she went outside. You would think she would have stopped trying to get them outside, but she never did. I guess it was worth the effort as she did occasionally get one outside …
Bliss knew how to relax and could be found lounging on our bed, the couch or the dog bed. Always with a pillow or stuffy acting as pillow.
Bliss had some peculiar habits. She loved to sit on her hind end and put her paws on your lap. There didn’t really seem to be a reason. She wasn’t begging for food just attention. She used to do that to Wayne and glance over at me as to say, “see I’m getting attention from someone”. Her most annoying habit was to sit at the back door asking to go outside. You would open the door, she would exit and then she would immediately jump on the door to get back inside. We never figured out what she was trying to do or get us to do except reopen the door? Who knows? She wrecked a few screens before we put a metal grate on the door to save the screens … didn’t stop her from jumping.
She was always excited to go outside especially if you were joining her. Often erupting into hysterical barking until your walk was under way.
Bliss truly enjoyed life on her terms, and I can’t believe our crazy girl is gone. We didn’t have nearly enough time to finish the things we started. I miss her terribly as she and I had a special bond that I can’t explain.
I love you Blissy. Life just seems too quiet.
